When Barbara O’Sullivan, an oncology nurse at a private physician practice, was faced with the need for colorectal surgery, she turned to David Rivadeneira, MD, and St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center. St.Catherine’s minimally invasive Robotic Surgery Program offered her the benefits of a lower risk of complications, less post-surgical pain and a faster recovery.
“I was thrilled when Dr. Rivadeneira told me that St. Catherine offered robotic surgery,” stated O’Sullivan. “The recuperation time was so much quicker than what I expected, and I felt so little discomfort that it feels like I never had surgery at all.”
St. Catherine is the first community hospital in Suffolk County to offer a multispecialty robotic surgery program. Equipped with the latest da Vinci® Si surgical system, St. Catherine’s surgeons can now use robotic procedures to treat bariatric, colorectal, general, gynecological and urologic conditions. The surgeon controls the robot, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise actions. The new program has earned the Special Innovation Award from the Hauppauge Industrial Association (HIA), and St.Catherine will be honored at HIA’s 18th Annual Business Achievement Awards Gala on September 12, 2012.
“St. Catherine is dedicated to building its minimally invasive surgical and multispecialty program,” stated St. Catherine’s Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO. “The addition of robotic surgery has transformed the way minimally invasive surgeries are being performed by our physicians, with greater precision through smaller incisions and extraordinary 3-D, HD visualization.”
