Smithtown, New York—St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center saluted its laboratory professionals in honor of National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, recognized this April 22-26, 2013. Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is an annual celebration of the laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in every aspect of health care. Since they often work behind the scenes, few people know about the critical testing they perform every day. Lab Week is a time to honor the more than 300,000 medical laboratory professionals around the country who perform and interpret more than 10 billion laboratory tests in the United States every year.
St. Catherine’s lab professionals took time to educate the next generation of aspiring high school health care professionals with hands-on tutorials. In partnership with the Smithtown Advisory Board, students from Commack High School, Smithtown High School East and West, enrolled in St. Catherine’s High School Exploration Internship Program were eager to learn from experienced professionals. The 16-week program, which runs from January to June, on Mondays evenings, offers students the opportunity to take part in 90- minute workshops/presentations by professionals from both the hospital and nursing/rehabilitation care center. During the semester the students commit to 30 hours of volunteer work which can be done in the hospital, nursing/rehabilitation care center, or in both areas. The program meets all New York State Education Department guidelines, and after completion, participating students receive half a health credit.
