With Thanksgiving just around the corner, followed by the winter holidays, the spirit of giving is alive and well on Long Island. This Thanksgiving, the employees of St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center will be getting together to make donations to the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry. The outreach efforts by the hospital employees are an annual event, and proof that Long Island businesses are giving back to the community in more ways than one.
In related news, the boys of the William Floyd varsity lacrosse team just recently held a fundraiser to support the Colonial Youth, Mastics and Shirley Community food pantries. They were supported in their efforts by the Moriches Elementary School Student Council, as well as their advisor Kellie Megna. The lacrosse team stood in front of the Stop & Shop deli in Shirley, and passed around fliers to customers and passersby listing the items which were needed for the food drive. They received almost $200 in donations, along with enough food to fill a small truck.
Looking to make a difference this year? If you missed out on your chance to participate in one of these food drives or donation efforts, you can still locate an opportunity to give or volunteer through Long Island Cares, Inc., one of the island’s oldest and most active charities. Around 283,700 people receive help from Long Island’s emergency food assistance programs each year. So if you have a little extra on your table this year, consider giving a Long Island family that’s less well off a reason to say “thank you” this Thanksgiving.
