Lake Grove, NY - September 5, 2014 - Special Olympics New York and the Time to Play Foundation, Inc. invite you to join them at the first annual I CAN BExtraordinary® Fashion Show at the Smith Haven Mall on Saturday, September 13, 2014 from 1 pm to 3 pm.
Special Olympics athletes were chosen to be the models for this event as they are inspirational and a true testament to achievement. “These Athletes do not let obstacles stop them. They are a true testament on how everyone has the ability to BExtraordinary®”, said BExtraordinary® co-founder Doreen Guma, Chairperson for the Time to Play Foundation, Inc., a not for profit 501c3 foundation with the mission and purpose to enrich the lives of others through programs, public awareness outreach activities, events and learning opportunities that further the concept of enjoying life.
The 14 athletes, 7 men and 7 women, will be modeling fall fashions exclusively supplied by Macy’s. They will also receive pampering to prepare them for their runway experience with donated hair styling by Cactus Salon, as well as BExtraordinary® makeup and unisex fragrance supplied by the Time to Play Foundation, Inc. The BExtraordinary® line’s message is that of empowerment.
The event is being sponsored by the Smith Haven Mall and is a fundraiser and public awareness event for Special Olympics Long Island Region. It will also help kick-off registration for the 5th Annual Town of Brookhaven Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai on November 22, 2014.
The I CAN BExtraordinary® Fashion Show has other incredibly empowering activities that will occur between 1 and 3 pm including:
1 – 1:10ish: Chris Roach, Comedian: MC and “warm up”. Chris’ nephew is a Special Olympics Athlete and a model in the I Can BExtraordinary® fashion show.
1:15 – 2 pm: Fashion Show with Special Olympics Athletes. We have 14 athletes who will be modeling. DJ will be provided by Robert from Sweet Soundsation
2 – 2:15: Katie Zimmer will sing. Katie is a 15 year old who is in remission with a lung disease. She now uses her voice
to help inspire others and sings for veterans groups and other charities. She will sing 2 songs, including an EP
she will be releasing entitled “Invincible” and “The Climb” by Miley Cirus
2:15 – 2:30: Ms. Senior NY 2012, Donna Dean will sing 2 songs. She’s really amazing, and the Pageant stands for that you are never too old to enjoy life, a truly inspiring message in line with the Time to Play Foundation’s philosophy. When Donna reached the young age of 60 she realized her dream of becoming a vocalist. She has entertained at the Bolton Center for the Wounded Warriors foundation and the Patchogue Theatre. She signed her email: Dreams have no expiration date! Never Retire, Reinvent Yourself. She will be singing God Bless the USA and The Wind Beneath My Wings.
2:30 – 2:45: Keith Godwin, comedian and a member of the Time to Play Foundation’s Council of Professional Resources. Keith is an honorably discharged Marine, a certified alcohol and substance abuse counselor and founder of RecoveryComics.com. Keith will provide a set of family friendly comedy.
2:45 – 3: Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) Jazz Ensemble – they are also a sponsor and are so inspirational. These singers don’t let anything stop them from being extraordinary.
During the event Dick’s Sporting Goods will be volunteering to coordinate interactive sporting events. Participation ribbons will be awarded to all who play.
Jackie Guma, a 19 year old photography student will be providing photography in the I CAN BExtraordinary® photo booth where anyone can pose for a free photograph
Free makeovers of BExtraordinary® Makeup and Fragrance will be sponsored by the Time to Play Foundation
The Special Olympics Polar Plunge Bear will be making an appearance
Informational tables of businesses that can help you BExtraordinary® will be present including SCWBEC, Brookhaven Town's BBAC, and more.
This event will help to provide year-round sports training and competition in over 22 Olympic-style sports for more than 65,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities living in New York, giving them continuing opportunities at no cost to them or their families.
