As Long Island continues to dig itself out of the tragic devastation that has all but halted life, some things did get back to normal - so to speak. In a limited capacity, some schools began opening their doors again to allow students in on Monday morning. Across New York and New Jersey schools have been closed due, but began opening their doors at least a little bit.
Bethpage School District was among the few in damaged areas to open Monday across Long Island. As students began to come through the doors at Kramer Avenue Elementary School in Plainview they would ask each other if they had heat and electricity at home. This, of course, was an important question as many were still without power, water, and even running low on food.
In the words of one mother of a fifth grader who simply answered that question with a definite, "No.", Lori Moerler said, "You know what? We are very fortunate. There's a lot of people who have nothing. We have our house. We have our family. We're OK."
That is the sentiment of a lot of people this morning as another storm pushed towards Long Island and people head to the polls. There are a lot of people still digging out from Sandy, but at least the children will have some sort of normalcy in the form of school and friends.
