On January 1, social media marketing firm, fishbat, Inc., comments on federal agencies turning to the use of social media to transmit important information during times of crisis.
According to Federal News Radio, many federal agencies are beginning to use social media in regards to communicating information during a crisis situation. The most recent example being the devastation brought on by Hurricane Sandy in early November. It not only allows them to send out information to a wide audience, but using social media platforms allows federal agencies to monitor situations as they develop as well as communicate with citizens on a personal level.
The article quotes Justin Herman, the social media lead for the Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies at the General Services Administration, who stated, “Social media offers that unique ability in order to engage and listen in real time to the needs of citizens.”
The one concern that comes from this is the spread of false information on social media sites. To try and minimize this, the article reports that many federal agencies have not only verified their Twitter accounts (the little blue check mark you may see next to a Twitter account name), but also keep information on their own accounts instead of the private accounts of employees.
Sida Li, vice-president of internal operations at social media agency, fishbat, Inc., commented in praise of this move to social media. “When there is an emergency of vast proportions, communication is one of the most important assets we have.” He continued, “It is commendable that federal agencies are beginning to utilize social media as a way of interacting with citizens. This will go a long way in protecting people during emergencies.”
