After the tragic events at the Boston Marathon yesterday, officials in Nassau County want to make sure that nothing will endanger the participants and spectators at the Long Island Marathon. After the bombings in Boston, many cities around the country went on high alert. According to County Executive Edward Mangano, police in the area are “closely monitoring” the situation. “We’re doing an overall risk assessment. Were gonna talk about increasing police presence and increasing things we’ll do covertly and overtly.”
The Long Island Marathon is scheduled to be held on May 5th. The standard route in years past has been along Meadowbrook Parkway between Jones Beach and Eisenhower Park. At this point, there is no word on whether the route will be moved, but it seems unlikely. Mangano states that police will be using electronic surveillance equipment in conjunction with bomb-sniffing dogs to ensure the safety of everyone who attends the marathon, and suggests that no one should be nervous about attending. As of this point, registration has remained high, with more than 5,000 planning to attend. Officials expect around 8,000 runners to show up on May 5th. “We will continue to do all that we can to make sure that it is a nice, safe event where people can gather.”
