Randall Scarlata, baritone, and Gilbert Kalish, piano, performing Franz Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter’s Journey)

March 1, 2013— Say goodbye to winter with one of the world’s great song cycles for voice and piano, Winterreise (A Winter’s Journey) written in 1828 by Franz Schubert and performed by renowned musicians, baritone Randall Scarlata and pianist Gilbert Kalish. A Winter’s Journey sets a series of poems by Wilhelm Müller to music, telling the story of the travels of a poet whose love has left him for another. Randall Scarlata is known for his warm, expressive sound, consummate musicianship and winning way with his audience. He enjoys a diverse career performing with leading orchestras, such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, The San Francisco Symphony, and Vienna’s Tonkünstler Orchestra and Akademie Orchester. He has appeared on concert stages across five continents.
The profound influence of pianist Gilbert Kalish as an educator and pianist in myriad performances and recordings has established him as a major figure in American music-making. This season he appears with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, performs at the Ojai Music Festival, and holds a residency at the San Francisco Conservatory. Mr. Kalish has also been an Artist of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2006. That year he was awarded the Peabody Medal by the Peabody Conservatory for his outstanding contributions to music in America. Mr. Kalish is a distinguished professor and head of the performance faculty at Stony Brook University.
