The 15th Annual SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition just wrapped up at Hofstra University. The competition took place on March 27th-29th, and the winners have just been announced. Over 2,000 students from 50 different high schools attended, most from the New York and New Jersey area—but some from as far away as Brazil. The competition awards engineering expertise and creative thinking as well as teamwork.
Students who came to compete worked in teams with the help of professional mentors to design and build robots over a six week period. Each team was given a standardized kit of parts which could be assembled in any manner the teams chose. The robots then competed in a game called “Aerial AssistSM.” Two alliances of three teams each tried to shoot as many balls as they could into goals during a match lasting two and a half minutes. Robots which collaborated to score were awarded extra points. Sponsors of this year’s event included BAE Systems, FESTO Corporation, Northrop Grumman, Stony Brook University, Farmingdale State College, and many others. SBPLI is already seeking businesses to act as sponsors for next year’s competition. More information is available at their website, www.sbpli.org.
