Earlier this year, several alligators were found wandering Long Island without their owners. In response to these events, the Suffolk County SPCA held an Amnesty Day in April. Three illegally owned alligators were turned in by their owners. It is illegal to keep alligators as well as a number of other reptiles. There is a $250 fine for illegal ownership. Releasing the animals is an actual criminal misdemeanor.
Those who drop off their reptiles at the September 7th Amnesty event will have a chance to do so with no questions asked and no prosecution. The event will take place between noon and 4 pm at PETCO in Selden on Middle Country Road. Animals which may be brought to the event include pythons, anacondas, monitor lizards, komodo dragons, and crocodiles. What will happen to the animals which are brought into authorities at the amnesty event? “The purpose of this effort is to get these reptiles and amphibians into a controlled environment where they can be cared for properly,” states Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA. So rest assured if you are on the fence about bringing your illegal reptile to the event, your pet will probably be better off.
