The Bay Park Sewage Plant gained attention from the press all over New York after spilling more than three million gallons of partially treated sewage into a Nassau waterway. The accident was blamed on a power outage at the sewage plant, and repairs are still proceeding. During Hurricane Sandy, more than nine feet of floodwater washed through the building, and right now it is still relying on its backup generators to supply power. The four main engines which powered the facility before went offline after Sandy destroyed their functionality.
The sewage plant has taken a lot of flak since the spill. “This is a basic human necessity; this is not a luxury item,” said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment. “Societies have lived and died based on their sewage systems.” The project to upgrade the plant is priced at $1.2 billion, and officials say they are well underway. On Tuesday, nearly 100 local residents were taken on a tour of the facility to alleviate their continuing concerns about the situation. Some residents have been unable to return to their homes since Sandy six months ago. “Nobody’s taking responsibility for 20 years of mismanagement,” complained one such resident, Cynthia O’Rourke.
