Glen Cove, NY – Today, Congressman Steve Israel (NY-3) endorsed Democratic nominee Tom Suozzi in his campaign for Congress. Suozzi is campaigning to succeed Israel, who announced his retirement from Congress earlier this year.
“I’m endorsing Tom Suozzi today because he has shown that he will be the best candidate to continue my relentless fight in Congress for New York’s middle-class families, veterans and seniors," said Israel. "Tom has also proven that he is the type of representative we need in Washington--someone who will bring big and bold ideas to the table and have the courage and political skill to solve problems."
The endorsement comes on the heels of Suozzi’s decisive victory in the Democratic primary in June.
“I want to thank Congressman Israel for all he’s done for our district and our families," said Suozzi. “This endorsement means a lot to me. Steve Israel is a true national leader with a fantastic legacy of tackling national issues while never fogetting his local constituents. I have big shoes to fill, and I will work my hardest to be worthy."
Israel's endorsment marks several endorsments Suozzi has received recently, including the endorsments of his opponents, Councilwoman Anna Kaplan, former North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Suffolk Legislator Steve Stern and attorney Jonathan Clarke, at a unity press conference a few days after the Democratic primary.
The 3rd Congressional District covers northern portions of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. Tom Suozzi won the Democratic Party nomination on June 28, 2016. The general election is on November 8, 2016.
