The Long Island College Hospital in Queens serves patients from Queens and nearby Suffolkand Nassau counties, as well as other patrons from downtown. This past year, the hospital has been at the center of a heated debate. SUNY has explained that they cannot afford to keep the hospital open, while community groups have lobbied to keep it open (successfully to date).
On Monday, SUNY officials announced that they have received a development offer from a third party. The developer has offered to purchase the property and lease it to other healthcare providers. The property would be used to house a fitness center and an urgent care center. The rest of the space would be converted to condos. Today the trustees are voting on whether or not to move forward with the new proposal. So far they have not named the developer to the press. Community groups are still fighting back, saying that condos do not serve the needs of the community. Some have stated that if an emergency room is included as part of the deal, they will consider backing down. The Long Island College Hospital currently sees about 70 patients a day in its emergency room, and has 23 inpatients. The payroll alone costs SUNY $10.8 million per month.
