Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the National American Red Cross, recently visited Long Island on the 21st of March. While visiting, McGovern spoke with community leaders about relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Others who attended the meeting with the Red Cross CEO included Gwen O’Shea of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Island Harvest’s Randi Dresner, and the President of the Long Island Association, Kevin Law.
Even though Superstorm Sandy is now months in the past, the damage it inflicted is an ongoing problem for residents of Suffolk and Nassau counties, who continue to search for relief. Many local residents were severely injured during the storm and are struggling to recover, while others have lost homes and incomes. During the meeting, McGovern announced that the Red Cross will be supporting local soup kitchens by providing $1.4 million to Island Harvest. The Red Cross previously gave $1.2 million to the soup kitchen effort back in February. $1 million will also be donated to the Long Island Unmet Needs Roundtable, an organization formed by a number of local non-profit groups, most prominently including United Way. The Roundtable will decide how to distribute the funds to residents in need.
