“Quimby Lane Walking Tour, Saturday September 15th, 10am”
On September 15th at 10am the Bridgehampton Historical Society will be hosting a walking tour of Quimby Lane, the enclave community created by E. E. Quimby at the turn of the 20th century. For an hour or two, guests will walk among this cluster of homes toward the southern end of Ocean Road and learn about their architectural style and the people associated with them.
Edward E. Quimby, of Orange, New Jersey, the dealer of lightning rods and a patent attorney, began summering in Bridgehampton in 1874, before the hamlet was well-established as a summer destination. Twenty years later he purchased 32 acres from the local Sandford family for a bargain and slowly embarked upon the creation of a family compound, much of which remains intact today.
Quimby family members still reside in greater Bridgehampton and other notable owners of Quimby Lane homes have included a Brooklyn mayor, the de Menil family, descendants of a successful whaling captain and the original creator of the soap opera for radio.
House histories almost always reveal interesting architectural and social commentary, and in this case, they will all revolve around E. E. Quimby’s compound on the western shore of Sagg Pond.
The tour will begin at the intersection of Ocean Road and Quimby Lane. Tickets are $5/members, $10/non-members. Rain cancels. For more information call (631) 613-6730, email bhhspc@gmail.com, or visit www.bridgehamptonhistoricalsociety.org.
