A new crisis center will be available to veterans at Vets Place Shelter in Yaphank in mid to late January. The Long Island Community Foundation funded center will provide 24 hour support services for veterans suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injury. The foundation’s grant of $30,000 will allow the Veterans Place Shelter to team up with the Pfc. Joseph Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project and the Supportive Services for Veterans Families project.
Suffolk County United Veterans Executive Director Michael Stoltz explains that veterans returning home to Long Island face significant challenges integrating back into civilian society. There are more veterans in terms of population density in Long Island than there are in any other city in the United States aside from San Diego. “This aggressive intervention and rapid support program will be another element in our system to help transitioning Vets deal with acute stressors, be safe and sober, resume recovery, and restore family and professional support.” If you are interested in the program, you may contact Wilkens Young, Director of Operations at (631) 924-8088. Suffolk County Untied Veterans has been assisting homeless and at-risk vets since 1989, while the Long Island community Foundation has been funding community service projects since 1978.
