Today is January 1st of 2014, and that means it's out with the old and come in with the new. On Long Island, to the astounding relief of practically everybody, that means that the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) will no longer be in charge of power distribution on the island. Newark-based PSEG will instead be providing power to Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Several days ago, PSEG posted its pledge online to its new customers inLong Island. “As our company assumes operations for the Long Island Power Authority on New Year’s, we know you—our new customers—expect a lot from us. We know that you have been dissatisfied in the past.” PSEG has vowed to freeze rates for the next two years to help facilitate the transition and ease the burden on Long Island customers. They have also stated that they plan to improve customer call centers to improve response times. New technology will improve the energy infrastructure to reduce outages and provide more consistent power. “Our aim is to take your electric utility from last in customer satisfaction to one of the best utilities in the country in five years … We pledge to listen to you and respond to your needs.”
