PSEG Long Island announced Monday night that they have reached an agreement with their unionized workers. Starting next February, they will raise worker salaries by 2%. The current agreement was originally set to expire next February, so the new agreement will be replacing that one if it is signed by all 1,400 members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049. Almost all of the unionized workforce now employed by PSEG on Long Island worked for Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) previously. So far, PSEG has done much to remedy the poor conditions LIPA imposed on the public. Now it is taking the next step by remedying the poor wages LIPA paid its workers.
If the agreement is signed, then workers will receive a payment of $500 next February 1st. On the 14th, the 2% increase to wages will take effect. A year later, workers would receive another raise of 2.25%. David Daly, president of PSEG Long Island expressed his approval of the agreement in a statement, where he said that the contract “provides continued stability and strengthens the partnership between the company, its employees, and IBEW Local 1049.” While salaries are going up for PSEG workers, PSEG has iterated that they will not be raising their rates for customers until 2016.
