On January 1st, PSEG took over a sLong Island’s power provider, replacing problem-plagued LIPA. LIPA came under fire for their numerous failures during Hurricane Sandy, when their inefficient business practices resulted in hundreds of Long Islanders going without power during critical days of the storm. PSEG didn’t even get a chance to get their feet wet before their trial by fire—or rather ice and snow—as Winter Storm Hercules rolled through to usher in the new year.
Thankfully, PSEG passed their trial. At 5 in the morning on Friday, PSEG reported that 822 customers had lost their power the evening before. Power had been restored to all but 23 by the time the announcement was posted. Throughout the morning, PSEG had to address new outages around Suffolk and Nassau. By noon, only 10 customers were without power. The rest of the power issues were addressed over the remaining hours of the afternoon. Customers were so grateful and relieved at the change in service that numerous locals wrote in to thank PSEG on Twitter. All in all, it is a very auspicious beginning, and hopefully signals the start of a new era of faster, more efficient response to power issues on Long Island.
