The New York Cosmos were a professional soccer team until they stopped competing in 1985. After several unsuccessful attempts to bring the Cosmos back to life, the team has finally been recreated and will be playing professionally in the North American Soccer League this year. This fall will mark their first professional game in thirty years. This may not just be a triumph for soccer fans in New York, but also for the entire Long Island community, thanks to a new construction application.
The Cosmos have proposed that a brand new $400 million soccer stadium be erected in Belmont Park. The development proposal names the stadium “Elmont Town Crossing,” and would include 25,000 seats. All construction would be privately funded. The stadium complex would also include nine new restaurants, 250,000 square feet which could be used for retail companies, a public park with 4.3 acres of land, and a hotel with 175 rooms. The new stadium would be a boon to the local economy, creating 500 construction jobs and 3,000 full time, permanent jobs. The construction alone would generate over $500 million for the local industry, and it is estimated that the soccer stadium could bring an additional $200 million a year to Belmont Park and Nassau County.
Along with all these benefits, the project would generate other advances in infrastructure. Parking, traffic flow, bus and rail transit through the area would see improvements. “This project, bringing a stadium, retail, restaurants and a park for the local community is just the shot in the arm our local economy needs,” stated Long Island Association President Kevin Law. If the project receives approval, construction would begin in 2014 and the stadium could be ready to open as soon as Spring 2016.
