Last night, Princesses: Long Island, the newest reality show set on Long Island (but hardly the only one) premiered on Bravo. The reality show follows the lives of six affluent college-educated Jewish women and their families and relationships, each of which encapsulates a particular social stereotype. The Jewish identities of the characters in the show is an aspect which sets the show apart from other reality shows which have not yet explored this particular ethnic identity. So far the show has received mixed reviews on social media websites, ezines and news feeds.
Interestingly enough, it is not the first project of this nature to feature wealthy young women in Long Island who are dependent on their family’s resources. Long Island Princesses Unleashed was a special on E! in 2010 which featured four young stars in a similar social situation. Long Island’s best known reality show however is Long Island Medium, which runs on TLC and features Hicksville medium Theresa Caputo and her family. Whether Princesses: Long Island will flop or go on to become a major success for Bravo is still impossible to say. Viewers will make up their minds in the coming weeks as the stories unfold, and Long Islanders are sure to share their responses to the show as well.
