Most of the national news these days which focuses on Long Island concerns the new Bravo reality series Princesses: Long Island. This show depicts the lives of six wealthy Jewish women who are still living with their parents and are closing in on age 30. Many viewers have been offended by how the show represents Long Island as a whole, the wealthy community, the Jewish community, and the town of Freeport.
Indeed, the town of Freeport was referred to by one star on the show as “the ghetto” during the series premiere. This comment by Ashlee White has so infuriated members of the Freeport community that they have gotten together to propose a boycott of Princesses: Long Island. Many members of the Jewish community say that hardly any of the stars on the show strike them as particularly Jewish, and most of them seem to have next to no understanding of their own proclaimed religion, but instead play up rampant stereotypes. Will the controversy be enough to get the show cancelled? We will just have to wait and see how things turn out; right now, Princesses: Long Island isn’t drawing the ratings Bravo had hoped for, though it is generating some buzz for Long Island.
