Weber Middle School in Port Washington has just made headlines around the country for passing a decisive ban on … pretty much anything fun that students could possibly do during recess. They have banned footballs, baseballs, tag, and other sports and games. Why? Apparently too many students were getting injured during recess, so the school decided to take a sweeping approach to student safety. Superintendent Kathleen Maloney has defended the decision, saying, “Some of these injuries can unintentionally become very serious, so we want to make sure our children have fun, but are also protected.”
Students are still allowed to play certain games, like tag, if they are under direct supervision, but balls of all sorts have been completely banned from the playground—except for Nerf balls. Nerf balls are still allowed. But for how long? Some people have questioned whether this is even a real headline, but considering it’s been widely reported by TIME and other major publications, by this point it seems pretty uncontestable. Students can at least hope that under the scrutiny of the national media, the administration of the school will change its mind and allow fun to resume once again during recess hours at Weber Middle School.
