When most people think about goods that are likely to be stolen, they think about jewelry and watches—not produce. But apparently pumpkins are worth quite a bit if you know how to move them. A thief or thieves recently stole around 600 pumpkins from the Fox Hollow Farm in Calverton. Pumpkins are grown there on 36 acres of farmland, and there an additional four acres where visitors may pay to pick their own pumpkins for the fall. Just how much are the stolen pumpkins worth? According to the owners of the Fox Hollow Farm, the produce stolen adds up to around $4,200 in value. The farm has belonged to the family since 1967, and the produce was removed from the farm sometime over the weekend. It is unclear how the thieves were able to enter the property and leave with so many pumpkins without anyone noticing them.
Police are searching for any information that can help lead them to the thieves who stole the produce. Right now, there are no reports on any leads, so authorities are inviting any tips that might possibly help. If you have any information, you may phone the police in Riverhead at 631-727-4500.
