Last year, a dog’s death on Long Island was blamed on a type of poisonous algae. According to Newsday, the poisonous blue-green algae has been discovered in two new locations in Mill Pond and Lake Agawam. The algae is poisonous not only to animals, but to humans as well. The dog that died from the algae last year was drinking water from Georgica Pond in East Hampton, where a blue-green algae bloom was discovered.
While blue-green algae is common and harmless in low levels, it is a health risk at the high levels which have been recorded at these three locations. Drinking infected water can lead to nervous system and liver damage, and in extreme cases, death. No other location on Long Island has yet reported blue-green algae bloom this year. There are no swimming areas along Mill Pond or LakeAgawam. If you are walking your dog in either area, be advised that the water is poisonous, and you should keep your pet away from it so that the same fate doesn’t befall your dog as befell the Jack Russell terrier last year in East Hampton. There has been no word on what is being done to try and control the spread of the algae bloom.
