Peppi Marchello, singer of the Long Island based rock band Good Rats, passed away from a heart attack yesterday evening around 9:00 pm. Marchello was 68 years old, but he had been plagued with recent health issues. Only weeks before, he had open-heart surgery, but he seemed to be getting better in the weeks following the operation. It came as a shock to friends, family and fans when he died on July 10th.
The Good Rats first formed in 1964 as the U-Men, but changed their name to Good Rats in 1969. The band was well enough known that they had status around the world, though they were always best known and loved on Long Island. In 2008, they were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. The Rolling Stone Magazine referred to them as “the world’s most famous unknown band.” Arrangements for Peppi’s funeral are already being undertaken. Peppi’s family has decided that his funeral will be open for his fans to attend as well as family members and friends. “My father was a blue collar rocker,” explains his son Stefan. “His funeral will be open to his fans—that’s exactly what he would have wanted.”
