GREENPORT, N.Y. (Nov. 8, 2012) – Peconic Landing will host a free Veterans Outreach Program for veterans on the North and South Forks, Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in its community center at 1500 Brecknock Road, Greenport.
Representatives of the Northport VA Medical Center will offer explanations of medical benefits and eligibility, hypertension screenings, ID card processing (for those eligible for VA healthcare), explanation of new healthcare programs, and assistance with application completion.
Free copies of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs book, “Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents and Survivors,” will be available. Event information can be obtained by calling 631.261.4400: Debbie Marro (ext. 7084) or Lorraine Talone (7238).
Following the program on Nov. 13 at 4 p.m., New York author Gene Rackovitch will be in the Peconic Landing library signing his latest book about the Marines: “My Corps: Short Stories and Reflections.”
With its “Adopt a Squad” program, Peconic Landing recently collected donations of everyday items from residents and staff to send to BRAVO Company, a courageous band of soldiers stationed in southern Afghanistan. Situated in a small desert outpost, the soldiers spend most of their time in the field, usually returning to base every 10 days.
Nineteen boxes, each weighing about 13 pounds, were filled with gum, canned nuts, licorice, beef jerky, protein bars, disposable razors, Q-tips, baby wipes, powdered laundry detergent, magazines and playing cards. It takes about 12 days for packages to get from Greenport to southern Afghanistan, and all boxes arrived. One soldier wrote, “The guys were overwhelmed with Peconic Landing’s generosity and kindness. They couldn’t believe all the goodies. It was like a birthday and Christmas all in one day! They send thanks and love. They were indeed moved.”
