GREENPORT, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2012) – Nestled between a golf course and a winery, the 144-acre waterfront campus of Peconic Landing continues to smash many of the stereotypes associated with retirement community living as it launches its fall Community Connection series of life enrichment and cultural programs for area residents of all ages.
Peconic Landing is proud to present the Ballet in Cinema series featuring the world’s most famous ballet companies captured live in high-definition digital projection. The Ballet in Cinema series will be held in the Peconic Landing Community Center and includes the following: The Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow presenting La Sylphide on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. (cost – $15); The Royal Ballet of London presenting Swan Lake on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m. (cost – $15 cost); and The Royal Ballet of London presenting the popular seasonal favorite, The Nutcracker, on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. (cost - $25).
“Many of our programs are open to the public,” said Peconic Landing Cultural Arts Coordinator Dominic Antignano. Antignano is also curator for the Outdoor Living Gallery, a permanent selection of sculptures from world-renowned artists on display at Brecknock Hall and open daily for self-guided tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October. Private tours are available by appointment.
As a partner of the Maritime Heritage of the North Fork, a month long Signature Series Event of Arts Alive Long Island, Peconic Landing will host events including Maritime Inspired Art, a juried art show opening at Brecknock Hall on Oct. 18 with a free reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Songs of the Sea follows at 6:30 p.m., with Frank Hendricks presenting some lesser-known aspects of maritime music as he performs sea shanties and focsles and discusses their meaning and usage by sailors aboard ship. (Donations will be accepted for this presentation, which is part of East End Arts’ Thursday Series.) On Sunday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. in Peconic Landing’s Community Center, the Brecknock Hall Foundation Distinguished Lecture Series will feature A History of Coastal Rescue Craft and their Local Designer, Greenport Native Frederick C. Beebe, presented free by nationally acclaimed author Retired Commander Timothy B. Dring (USNR).
For those stressing over the college application process and financial aid, two evening presentations will be offered at Brecknock Hall. Both are free but require registration. The College Application Process, held Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. for 11th and 12th grade students and their parents, will provide helpful hints regarding the common application, resume, college essay, teacher recommendations and more. Instructor Kathy Williams, business education teacher at Southold High School, has worked with juniors and seniors for 25 years. How Will We Pay for That? Making College Financial Aid Work for You will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., offering practical tips for navigating the maze of college financial aid forms (including how to properly list assets to derive maximum benefit and lower college costs). Instructor Philip Meyer, an expert financial aid consultant with over 30 years of experience, was recently featured on News 12 and in Newsday.
A professional development series will be offered at Brecknock Hall, as well. To be presented: Rev Up Your Company’s Social Media Engine on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.; Time Management Make-over on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.; and Bridge the Generation Gap: Generation-specific Communication Strategies to Increase Productivity and Boost Revenue on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. Cost is $35 per session, or $95 for all three sessions.
Just for fun and pleasure, Designing Silver Jewelry Using Precious Metal Clay will be offered on three Mondays – Oct. 15, 22 and 29 – from 5:30-7:30 p.m. A $75 class fee plus $45 materials fee are payable to the instructor at the first class. Flowering Houseplants: Orchids & More will be offered Wed., Nov. 7, from 6-7:30 p.m. A $15 class fee and $25 materials fee are payable to the instructor at the first class. Both classes will be held in Brecknock Hall and require registration.
A broadcast from the Live from New York’s 92nd Street Y series – Anna Quindlen with Jodi Kantor – will be presented at Peconic Landing’s Community Center at 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Quindlen will discuss her latest book, a memoir on aging, titled Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake, which debuted at number one on The New York Times best-seller list. She and Kantor, a New York Times correspondent and author of the best seller, The Obamas, will appear as part of the Ruth Stanton Illustrious Women Series. Cost for the event is $10.
