GREENPORT, N.Y. –– Landing has announced its spring Community Connection series of life enrichment and cultural programs for area residents of all ages.
At this not-for-profit continuing care retirement community in Greenport, many of the Community Connection offerings are free to the public (some involve a fee). Registration is required for all sessions. Arts & Culture events include “La Esmeralda,” which was recently added to the spring Ballet in Cinema series featuring the world’s most famous ballet companies captured live in high-definition digital projection. This famous ballet by the Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow will be presented Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m., in the Peconic Landing Community Center at 1500 Brecknock Road, Greenport for just $15.
Highlighting free events is “An Afternoon with Janet Roach” on Saturday, June 8, at 4 p.m. in the Community Center. Academy Award nominated screenwriter Roach, known for her screenplay, “Prizzi’s Honor,” will discuss the more than one dozen film scripts she has written, along with her career as a teacher, lecturer and former documentary filmmaker for CBS and PBS.
Professional Development events include a “Resilience Round Table Series” featuring three experiential workshops beginning April 2: “The Power of Communication,” “Goal Setting & Mechanics of Motivation” and “Leadership Lab: Discover Your Formula for Inspired Leadership.” Cost for the evening workshops
is $49 each, $44 if registering by March 21, or all three workshops for $120.
Fun & Pleasure classes range from “Designing Silver Jewelry Using Precious Metal Clay” classes ($75 for three Monday evening classes beginning April 29 plus $45 materials fee, payable to instructor at first class) to “Using Your Digital Camera: Going from Photography Roulette to Reliable Results” ($50 for four Wednesday evening classes beginning May 1). Birders can enjoy free events: “Birds of Peconic Landing” and a “Bird Walk,” April 24 and April 25, with Tom Damiani, avian naturalist at the North Fork Audubon Society.
“True-U. Saturday,” a Personal Development session on Saturday, May 4, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Brecknock Hall is an opportunity for women of all ages to experience a “pop-up campus adventure” of multi-generational exploration of how we create our lives according to our beliefs. This women’s retreat, facilitated by business leaders Mary Eisenstein and Yvonne Lieblein, can be experienced solo or with family and friends. Cost of $129 includes a continental breakfast; “The Resilient Woman Luncheon” with special guest, North Fork resident Regina M. Calcaterra, Esq., named 2012 “Woman of the Year” by East End Women’s Network and the first woman to be named Chief Deputy Suffolk County Executive; a True-U. Inspiration Kit and True- U webpage access; and eight personalized weekly emails supporting participants’ True-U focus.
Free You & Your Family events include “Estate Planning and Investment Strategy in a World of Fiscal Cliffs: Black, White or 50 Shades of Grey” on April 18 at 4 p.m. at Peconic Landing’s Community Center. Guest speakers will discuss retirement and investment strategies, charitable giving and information about recent changes in tax legislation that can impact individuals and their families.
Information also can be found in Community Connection about the 8th annual May Mile & 5K Race, “The East End’s premier Older Americans Month Celebration,” Saturday, May 11, at the Peconic Landing Campus. This year’s event features a new Puppy Bowl in participation with North Shore Animal League America and Southampton Animal Shelter (puppies available for adoption following Puppy Bowl event). May Mile & 5K event proceeds benefit the Greenport Fire Department.
Other “date saver” events include the opening reception of “The Rest is Art: A Celebration of the Bench as an Art Form” at Brecknock Hall, Sunday, June 30, 4 p.m., where guests will be able to meet the artists of the new juried exhibition in Peconic Landing’s permanent outdoor sculpture garden.
The Manhattan Film Institute Summer Event Series includes award-winning writers and directors hosting exclusive screenings including Tony Goldwyn screening “A Walk on the Moon,” Saturday, July 6; Chazz Palminteri screening “Bullets Over Broadway,” Thursday, July 11; and Joe Pantoliano screening “Memento,” Saturday, July 14. Screenings take place at Peconic Landing’s Community Center at 7:30 p.m. and cost $15 per screening.
