Experience the world’s most famous ballet companies live in high-definition digital projection
GREENPORT, N.Y. –– Peconic Landing has added “La Esmeralda” to its spring Ballet in Cinema series featuring the world’s most famous ballet companies captured live in high-definition digital projection. Ballets presented through May in the Peconic Landing Community Center at 1500 Brecknock Road, Greenport, are open to the public.
“Notre-Dame de Paris” will be featured at Peconic Landing Sunday, March 10, at 3 p.m., presented by Teatro alla Scala Ballet, Milan. Inspired by Victor Hugo’s novel, with music by Maurice Jarre, sets by René Allio and the renowned costumes of Yves Saint-Laurent, “Notre-Dame de Paris” returns to La Scala Ballet after more than 10 years since its last performances. Once again it will be celebrating choreographer Roland Petit and the triumph of his vision of performance as a total creation: dance, sets, costumes, music, theatricality . . . with two of the international ballet world’s brightest stars: Roberto Bolle and Natalia Osipova. Cost is $15.
Peconic Landing will present “La Esmeralda” Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. “La Esmeralda,” from the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, is Victor Hugo’s tale of love and loyalty triumphing over corruption, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, with a new version by Yuri Burklava an Vasily Medvedev. The ballet stars prima ballerina Maria Alexandrova, who “infuses her perfectly shaped classical style with contemporary energy” (“The New York Times”) with Denis Savin and Ruslan Skvortsov. Cost is $15. “The Rite of Spring,” performed by the Bolshoi Ballet (previously scheduled for April 21), has been postponed.
“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by The Royal Ballet of London will be featured at Peconic Landing Sunday, May 5, at 3 p.m. Those familiar with Lewis Carroll’s literary menagerie of colorful characters will enjoy the clarity with which Christopher Wheeldon portrays them in dance. The whole Company is drawn into the fun, dancing a myriad of quirky characters: a twitchy White Rabbit, a tap dancing Mad Hatter, a sinuous caterpillar and so many more. Alice and the Knave of Hearts, deftly danced by two Royal Ballet Principal dancers, are at the center of the story, and the role of The Queen of Hearts, another Principal, is wittily captured with hilarious results. “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” is a brilliantly imagined show and, with a magical score, ingeniously inventive designs and a wealth of theatrical effects, has something for everyone to treasure. Don’t miss what the Telegraph called “a dazzling affair . . . intoxicating and exceptional . . . [Wheeldon] – along with everyone else involved in this mind-boggling production – should also take a bow.” Cost is $15.
