1,500 people showed up last night to a meeting hosted by John King Jr., the education commissioner of New York, to protest state testing requirements along with the academic standards set as part of the state’s Common Core curriculum. The meeting was held at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket in an auditorium with a capacity for only 900 attendees. During the event, King tried to defend the Common Core, saying that the schools need more time to demonstrate the success of the system, but parents and educators booed him while he talked. Whenever a speaker derided the state testing standards and Common Core, the audience members cheered loudly.
The system weighs the academic performance of teachers according to student test scores, subjecting teachers to unrealistic standards. Parents and educators describe the system as an unfair one which makes life difficult for everyone. One teacher, Eric Gustafson of the Three Village school district, was cheered with a standing ovation when he stated, “Your approach has taken the joy out of teaching and the adventure out of learning.” Another meeting will be held today at Mineola High School in Garden City Park, where more outcries are expected.
