Anyone who has been diagnosed, or has a relative who has been diagnosed, with breast cancer knows that it does not discriminate on who it brings its damaging effects to. New techniques to combat this once deadly cancer have come a long way in recent years thanks to tireless efforts in research. However, many women each year die of breast cancer so there is still plenty of work to be done. Panera Bread, a deli/restaurant with several locations in Long Island, has been a strong supporter of breast cancer research for many years.
The annual Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign run by Panera Bread raised more than $30,000 this year to benefit several local breast cancer organizations. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Panera Bread bakers hand twisted thousands of cherry vanilla bagels into the iconic “pink ribbon” shape to raise funds for prevention and a cure, but, as the New Year approaches, they also hope the bagels have served as a reminder to women to take control of their own health by scheduling their yearly mammograms.
This is an important part of who Panera Bread is. And they are passionate that women across the country take up the commitment of mammograms. "Women need to make this an annual New Year’s resolution that they actually keep,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, franchisee of the Long Island bakery-cafes.
Recently, Panera Bread presented Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Programs and the Breast Cancer Research Program with a check for nearly $8,500 to help advance their work. A check for $5,200 was also given to Gilda’s Club New York City which creates welcoming communities of free support for everyone living with cancer – men, women, teens and children – along with their families and friends.
This is a tremendous happening and a great way for community businesses to be actively involved with the people in their communities and furthering a much greater agenda.
