OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO CALL FOR BLOOD

They came out in droves. Thanks to all who supported the emergency call for blood in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, 124 units were collected. Eastern Long Island Hospital typically hosts a blood drive three times a year, resulting in an average collection of 50 units.

“It is wonderful to see such a huge outpouring of community support,” states Paul J. Connor III, President and CEO. “Proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that here on the North Fork and Shelter Island, people genuinely care about the health and wellbeing of their fellow neighbors.”

A blood donor is a special kind of volunteer. One donation of blood can save as many as five lives. Hospitals need to keep an adequate supply of blood on hand for everyday emergencies, routine surgeries and blood transfusions.
