An all-female student team from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Syosset won the Nassau County Championship in the 2013 New York State Mock Trial Tournament. This is the first time that Our Lady of Mercy has won this tournament and they beat out dozens of other high schools to win the county tournament.
Our Lady of Mercy out-argued 46 other county high schools to win. They were led by Teacher Coaches Meredith Kurz and Rosefina Cali Di Campo. In the regional competition, they lost to Suffolk County Champion William Floyd High School, but their accomplishment is one that they will never forget.
This tournament is the largest state competition that allows high school students to argue a real case in a courtroom of the Supreme Court in Mineola. This year, over 100 judges and attorneys volunteered and more than 500 students from 47 high schools competed in 79 trials. Judges and attorneys aided the teams in their cases and in the judging of the competition.
The Honorable Jeffrey Goodstein, Honorable John G. Marks, and Honorable Marilyn Genoa co-chair the program and the Nassau County Bar Association coordinates it. For more information, visit www.nassaubar.org or call 516-747-4070.
