West Islip, NY 11795 - On October 29, 2012, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center was preparing for impending Hurricane Sandy and making decisions regarding the safety of their residents and they reached out to West Islip Fire Department for assistance. A quick response to their request was granted and the Fire Department team arrived. Chief Scott Harvey met with Bill Kelly, Director of Plant Operations to discuss a plan of action to ensure the safety of all.
A plan was put into place to evacuate 60 residents from the first floor of the building and the remainder be moved to the second floor where they would shelter in place. Administration diligently secured five nursing facilities to shelter their residents should the need arise based on the reports from the Town of Islip, Office of Emergency Management. When the trajectory of the storm was confirmed, the evacuation was initiated. West Islip Fire Department made themselves readily available to assist and provide guidance during the entire evacuation process. They helped coordinate the front of the building by directing traffic and putting calls out to the Suffolk County Emergency Office Center who in turn was able to assist us with ambulances for additional transportation.
The West Islip Fire Department were there offering comfort and compassion to a vulnerable population and are outstanding examples of the community helping community. “It is because of the professionalism and compassion of community members like the West Islip Fire Department that Our Lady of Consolation was able to transport our residents safely. Our residents are our number one priority and we thank West Islip Fire Department for their continued commitment to our facility,” stated Sr. Marilyn Breen, Chief Administrative Officer from Our Lady of Consolation.
