A new survey on Long Island executives has just been completed for Newsday by S&P Capital IQ, a line of McGraw-Hill which researches analytics. The group compiled a list of the 249 most highly paid executives on Long Island in 2012. The most striking demographic information gleaned from the survey concerned the sexes of the executives. Only 11 of the 249 executives were female.
The most highly paid executive on the list was Lawrence D. Kingsley, CEO and president of Pall Corp., who received $33.8 million in 2012. The most highly paid female executive was Lisa McDermott, former chief financial officer at the same company. She received $3.7 million in 2012, only about one-twelfth as much money as Kingsley. Only five women executives on the island earned more than a million last year, whereas 82 male executives were able to earn a million or more. Donna Haynes, vice president of Women Economic Developers of Long Island, says that the disparity is likely the result of challenges women face balancing family and work obligations when men refuse to step into the family role. “… They often don’t have the time for networking, to go on that corporate retreat and meet executive leaders. They might not be able to forge the professional relationships that are helpful when it comes time to advance in the company.”
