The Department of Environmental Conservation has just settled on plans to remove some groundwater contamination from an industrial site on Long Island. The groundwater contamination has been a problem at Operable Unit 3 of Northrop Grumman’s Bethpage Facility for quite some time. The contamination poses a threat to public health since it may get into wells which provide water for drinking.
How will officials tackle the problem? The plan will involve the installation of groundwater extraction wells and the removal of contamination from buildings, sidewalks and soil. By removing the pollutants, officials will prevent them from spreading and eventually making their way into the drinking supply for Nassau County residents. Speaking about the contamination removal procedure, Commissioner Joseph Martens stated, “DEC listened to and carefully considered the concerns of the public before selecting a remedy to address the long-standing contamination at the Northrop Grumman site.”
The plans to remove the contamination will protect public health immediately and over the long term, making it a top priority for the DEC. Northrop Grumman has not published any statements about the situation or why there was so much oversight in the procedures governing the company’s industrial waste.
