Hurricane Sandy may have struck months ago, but the recovery process has been an ongoing one, and for many Long Island residents, it’s far from over. There’s good news though for commuters and business owners. Five miles of damaged roads and dunes along the Ocean Parkway should be fully repaired by tomorrow, which means that the parkway will be opened again to tourists in time for Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend is one of the most important times of year for Long Island businesses.
Ocean Parkwayis a key highway for traffic moving through the area. Visitors who want to visit Robert Moses State Parkc an’t access the area without the roadway. The repairs were very expensive, costing more than $35 million. Thankfully the federal government has agreed to reimburse the State of New York for almost the entire repair process, so the final bill will only be around $3 million. For a struggling economy, this comes as a major relief, as does the re-opening of the road. Owners of hotels, restaurants, fishing charters and other companies will be relieved that Long Island residents are going back to their routines and that visitors to the island this summer will be able to access their businesses.
