Nine nursing home workers have just been arrested in a case involving the death of a patient at the Medford Multicare Center. 72 year old Aurelia Rios had been admitted to the nursing home for rehabilitation after being treated at the hospital for a breathing disorder. According to prosecutors in the case, Kethie Joseph, a LPN at the nursing home, failed to notice that Rios required a ventilator. Rios was left unattended for two hours, during which she suffocated to death. Warning alarms sounded, but nobody at the nursing home assisted her.
Joseph is being charged with criminally negligent homicide. Kimberly Lappe, another nursing home worker, is being charged for ignoring the alarms and falsifying records. Christina Corelli faces similar charges for ignoring the alarms, and Patricia Giovanni is accused of the same, and for neglecting her post. Nursing home administrators David Fielding and Christine Boylan have been charged as well with falsifying records about the alarm system. Fielding and the others lied to Rios’ daughter about her mother’s death, stating that Aurelia died of a heart attack. Authorities found out the truth only because a whistleblower at the nursing home called to inform officials of what had happened.
