The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research has just reported that they were able to rescue a three day old harbor seal pup which was struggling near The Sands, which is a banquet hall located in Atlantic Beach. Several passersby had noticed the struggling baby seal and phoned into the foundation to request that they help. The foundation sent researchers to rescue the baby seal. Researchers were unable to figure out why the seal pup was alone. It may be that it was abandoned, that something else happened to the mother, or that the crowds at the beach had separated the pup from her mother.
The harbor seal is currently residing in the marine mammal hospital in Riverhead, run by the foundation. The foundation is feeding formula to the seal. At this point there is no announcement as to whether the seal pup will be transferred to an aquarium or released back into the wild. There is also no word yet on whether the mother seal has been identified. Many wild animals are rescued on Long Island every year. Often these animals find a new home at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center where they can be cared for by professionals.
