When it comes to putting people back to work two things have to happen. The first is to locate an industry which is sustainable and growing. The second is to inject some money into the infrastructure and expansion. New York, and especially Long Island, has always known that the food industry is something that can be built upon. Because of this, Gov. Cuomo has decided to take food distribution to another level this coming year. The governor says the state will spend $3.6 million to create four new food distribution hubs across upstate New York, creating 150 jobs and giving farmers new opportunities to get their products to consumers.
This is great news for the state and for its workers. Not only will it put people to work, but will also broaden out into other sectors such as transportation and construction.
Cuomo says the funds will be used to create food hubs in Canastota in central New York, Groton in the Finger Lakes region, Kingston in the Hudson Valley and Canton in the North Country. An existing food hub in Riverhead on Long Island is getting $500,000 to renovate a building.
More of the money will be going to established locations to purchase new trucks, refrigeration units, and processing equipment. The food industry is one that is not easily broken by economic woes. Everyone has to eat, right? So, these steps taken by the governor are good ones and should be welcomed by the state and communities.
