Gardening and farming are prominent on Long Island, particularly in Suffolk county. Today, a brand new website called www.longislandcommunitygardens.org launched. The website was developed by Stony Brook University Family Medicine as part of their Community Roots Project alongside the Suffolk County Food Policy Council and Sustainable Long Island. Stony Brook University’s diabetic interns also assisted with the development of the site.
As a community project, the website also caters to the community. New and veteran gardeners, professionals and hobbyists, will be able to look on the website to learn more about gardening as well as the locations of community gardens in the area. Speaking about the new site, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone stated that community gardens help to build awareness of healthy eating choices for children as well as adults. “This website provides our citizens with the information and tools they require to seed and grow community gardens across Long Island.” Gardening also provides a fun and healthy outlet for physical activity, which is one more way in which gardening can contribute to public health. Recognizing the growth and success of the new site, Iman Marghoob of Stony Brook Medicine said, “The website has already received much praise from local community garden managers.”
