It’s certainly easier to get by on Long Island if you have a lot of money. Apparently that plays a huge role in the public image which television viewers associate with LI. A brand new reality television series on Bravo will be premiering on June 2nd, and will feature the lives of six 27-30 year old “princesses” on Long Island. These women still live at home with their parents because they enjoy the luxuries of their privileged homes.
Princesses: Long Island focuses on not only life’s little luxuries (shoe shopping on the parents’ dime and having mom around to do the laundry) but also on the difficulties of life for women who live at home in their late 20s. As one participant points out, “When some guys hear that I live at home , they get weirded out.” Another participant lives at home not so she can sit on her hands, but so she can start a business. Some of the women are happy with their living arrangements while others are not. Some Long Island residents are critical of the new show, saying that it portrays a negative and inaccurate image of Long Island. One resident in Great Neck told The Review, “The town where I’m from is laid back … if they’re going to portray it as a snobby Long Island town, they’re going to be wrong.”
