Governor Andrew M. Cuomo passed a new law this week called the “Puppy Mill Bill.” This law was proposed by Assembly member Linda B. Rosenthanl, and will increase regulation of pet dealers throughout New York State. The law will require that stores do not purchase their animals from puppy mills where animals are mistreated, and that they also maintain the health and well being of animals in the shops. In puppy mills, animals are treated as commodities and are usually kept penned in small, inhumane cages. Breeding animals are kept in conditions of constant pregnancy, and are not treated for their health issues. The puppies and kitties born in breeding mills often develop or are born with serious health conditions as well.
“With this new authority in hand, municipalities … will be able to pass tough new laws to crack down on puppy mills and bad breeders who place profit above the health and safety of animals,” stated Rosenthal. “This is a victory for animals, and for everyone who loves them and fought so long and hard to see this bill finally become law.” Long Islanders also have the option of adopting their animals from rescues and shelters.
