Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman has just announced that a new outreach program is available to help homeowners on Long Island who are struggling in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Numerous homeowners are faced with the task of making repairs to their homes and yards, and are faced with piles of unresolved insurance claims and expenses as companies delay in paying out benefits. There have been abundant complaints about unfair denials ever since the hurricane struck.
How will it work? $732,000 is being divided up among 18 different organizations which are funded as part of the Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP). Homeowners who have been dealing with repairs and claims post-Sandy may already be familiar with HOPP and its associated organizations. These organizations help consumers to contest insurance claims which have been unfairly denied and to get past delays in collecting benefits. Those who feel that their home insurance companies are paying out less than promised may go through a HOPP organization to improve their chances of getting the full reward which is owed to them.
“New Yorkers have already suffered enough as a result ofSandy,” stated Schneiderman. “There is no excuse for unnecessary delays or denials for homeowners who are fighting to rebuild their lives following the storm.” HOPP presently serves homeowners who live in Queens, Kings,Richmond,SuffolkandNassau. The money comes from the National Mortgage Servicing Settlement which was announced in February of last year.
If you require assistance with your insurance claims or benefits applications, call the HOPP program’s toll-free hotline at 1-855-HOME-456.
