If you have a child who loves to work with his or her hands, the new “Broken? Fix It!” exhibit at the Long Island Children’s Museum is a perfect way to spend a day. At this exhibit, children learn useful and fun skills which can be used for repairs. “Children used to learn about things like this in home economics classes or shop, but that’s been phased out in some schools, and kids today have lost that knowledge,” explains Maureen P. Mangan, director of communications and marketing for the museum.
Children who visit the exhibit not only get to learn about tools, but also get to do hands-on repair work fixing watches, jewelry, electronics, bicycles, books, and more. Kids even can learn some basic automotive maintenance skills, like how to change the oil in a car. This exhibit isn’t just for kids either; if you’re a parent, you may very well learn something too. “I’ve actually seen parents put down their cellphones and play with their kids,” says senior exhibit and program director Dawn Weiss. So head over to the museum sometime between now and the 5th of January to share an experience with your child that is both fun and productive!
