Long Island students who enjoy reading have a new chance to win money for college. The Elmont Memorial Library has just announced its Annual College Scholarship Award for 2013. Each student who wins the award will receive $1,000 to spend at a school of his or her choice. In order to qualify, students must belong to the Library and have a status of “good standing” for the past two years or longer. Students with library cards are not automatically entered into the drawing; those who wish to participate will need to pick up applications from their high school guidance counselors. Alternately, you can find an application form at the library itself at 700 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont, New York.
Students who wish to enter are directed to fill out the application forms and then submit them to their guidance counselors for review. A resume must be attached along with the submission, as well as an essay of 500 words or less discussing a vision for the role of public libraries in the future. All finished applications and attached resumes and essays must be submitted in a sealed envelope to the Elmont Memorial Library by Thursday, May 9th, in order to qualify. Note that students who enter must attend either of Elmont’s two high schools to qualify, Elmont Memorial High School or Sewanhaka High School.
