Long Island Rock climbers who can’t get out of town much to scale the heights can celebrate: A huge new rock climbing gym will be installed inLong IslandCity’s Court Square this spring. The gym will be one of the largest in the entire country, offering 30,000 square feet of climbing walls. Up to 500 climbers will be able to use the facility at the same time. Owner Mike Wolfert, who previously opened The Cliffs at Valhalla, a rock climbing gym in Westchester City, says, “It’s a fantastic space, which is hard to find in the city—high ceilings and no columns.”
Climbers will be able to climb as high as 60 feet off the ground. The curved walls will include LED lighting so that it is easy for climbers to see what they are doing, no matter where they are in the huge facility. There will even be specific areas set aside for bouldering, a special type of climbing where climbers don’t use ropes. There will also be “top out” ledges where climbers can try to mount indoor summits. An additional fitness section will offer free weights and other equipment. Showers and a retail store will be included as well. Climbers who need to stock up on equipment will be able to buy it directly on site.
