Westbury, NY - April 27, 2016 - For the fifth consecutive year, the Westbury-based credit union NEFCU will be cheering on hundreds of local athletes in its role as a major sponsor of the annual Long Island Special Olympics, May 1 at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington.
This marks the second consecutive year NEFCU has signed on as a Gold sponsor for the competition, after serving the previous three years at the Silver level. This year’s competition is expected to draw more than 440 local athletes from Long Island to compete in track and field, swimming, tennis, softball and a number of other sports and events. There will also be a young athlete program for athletes two to seven years old.
As a Gold sponsor, NEFCU will be providing track marshals and volunteers to help coordinate activities on the field and in the stands. The credit union will also provide a tented area for athletes and fans to take part in arts and crafts projects, fun games and other activities during the day-long competition.
More than 200 coaches, 500 volunteers, and 500 spectators will join the Special Olympians in Huntington for a day that will be long remembered by all those in attendance.
“These athletes are a source of tremendous inspiration – from how they train and compete, to how they exhibit sportsmanship,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “We are so proud to support this thrilling day that features so many accomplishments. It’s a day to be inspired, awed and moved by the passion and commitment these young people exhibit.”
This year’s spring competition will take place May 1 at Walt Whitman High School in South Huntington. The Games begin with an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and conclude with the closing ceremonies at 4:00 p.m.
“For five years we’ve had the honor of having NEFCU in our corner as a dedicated and generous sponsor,” said Diane Colonna, regional director of the Long Island Special Olympics. “The Special Olympics brings out the best on Long Island, and that goes for our competitors, volunteers, fans and sponsors.”
