NATIONAL GRID REMINDS NEW YORK AND LONG ISLAND CUSTOMERS WITH PROPERTY DAMAGE OR FLOODING WHAT TO DO TO HAVE NATURAL GAS SERVICE RECONNECTED
Always Use a Licensed and Insured Plumbing / Heating Contractor for
Repair or Replacement of Natural Gas Appliances
November 17, 2012 -- National Grid’s goal is to quickly and safely reconnect natural gas service, where possible, for customers whose appliances or heating system were exposed to flood water. The first step is for customers to call National Grid at one of the following numbers to initiate the process:
In general, these are the steps required for customers to have service reconnected where it is possible to do so:
“Our customers have faced unprecedented damage at the hands of Hurricane Sandy,” said Ken Daly, president, National Grid,New York. “Calling National Grid to get the re-connection process started and making sure to have all gas appliances thoroughly checked by a licensed and insured contractor is the best way to stay safe and avoid potential problems. We want customers to be safe, always."
Any flood-impacted appliances, including the heating system, inspected and repaired or replaced by a properly licensed and insured plumber or HVAC contractor. Flood waters can permanently damage gas and electrical equipment. Even if the equipment dries out, contaminants can affect electronics and moving parts. Corrosion is likely and is often hidden where it cannot be seen. This can lead to failures and can cause fires, even if the equipment appears intact, and functions after drying out.
Always ask for a license certificate and number or call your local contractor licensing authority to check the contractor’s credentials. Remember, when dealing with natural gas, safety is critical. Customers should also make sure to get a signed contract from the contractor that includes costs for labor, materials and the expected time to complete the job. Customers can use the following links to check to see if a plumber or heating contractor is properly licensed:
Customers also should call National Grid immediately if they smell natural gas -- whether or not they have service -- at the following numbers:
